Foundations of Rotvrier Poetry

These statements and quote are intended to frame the aspirations and aesthetic of our poetry review, while leaving latitudes for free-ranging and in-depth explorations.

Experimental, surrealist, and beat-influnced poetry welcome.

Less is more.  Tight, well-constructed poems are preferred.

Format poems for a 5" X 8" journal.

Pure materialsism is too limited. Pure rationality is good to avoid.

Rotvrier poetry is syncretic and seeks to include  poetry from as many cultures and perspectives as possible to promote empathy and understanding within the human community.

It is strongly held that the process of creating poetry produces more than mere content to be consumed.  Considering poetry as content is unacceptable.  Poetry is a shared human birthright.

Observations of nature are essential for producing rotvrier poetry.  Contemplating forms, colors, textures and modes of existance of flora and fauna where the poet exists is highly recommended.  The Italian term "infinito stupore" or "unending astonishment" is worth consideration.

Rotvrier poetry operates much like a Zen koan, hexagram description from the I Ching, or a verse from the Gospel of Thomas.

Sonic excellence is worthy of aspiration. How this is defined is a matter of taste admittedly.  No formula exists to meet this mark.  Training the ear to music of high quality is highly recommended.

"The artist must always be placing themself in the position of the visitor, of the user; the place where they will be most inclined to stop is the sensitive point which demands their utmost care; it is from there that the forms of the monument must exert their full power over the imagination."

Bouleau, Charles. "The Painter's Secret Geometry."  Dover Publications. Minola, NY. pg 13-14.
